Selected Proverbs on Speech

17:20     A man of perverse heart does not prosper; he whose tongue is deceitful falls into trouble.

15:04     The tongue that brings healing is a tree of  life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.

12:19     Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.

12:22 The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful.

26:28 A lying tongue hates those it hurts, and a flattering mouth works ruin.

29:05 Whoever flatters his neighbor is spreading a net for his feet.

28:23 He who rebukes a man will in the end gain more favor than he who has a flattering tongue.

10:18 He who conceals his hatred has lying lips, and whoever spreads slander is a fool.

30:10 Do not slander a servant to his master, or he will curse you, and you will pay for it.

11:12 A man who lacks judgment derides his neighbor, but a man of understanding holds his tongue.

11:13 A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy man keeps a secret.

20:19 A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid a man who talks to much.

26:22 The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man’s inmost parts.

16:28 A perverse man stirs up dissension, and a gossip separates close friends.

17:09 He who covers over an offense promotes love, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.

17:14 Starting a quarrel is like beaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.

17:19 He who loves a quarrel loves sin; he who builds a high gate invites destruction.

20:03 It is to a man’s honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel.

29:08 Mockers stir up a city, but wise men turn away anger.

26:21 As charcoal to embers and as wood to fire, so is a quarrelsome man for kindling strife.

30:33 For as churning the milk produces butter, and as twisting the nose produces blood, so stirring up anger produces strife.

15:01 A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

15:18 A hot-tempered man stirs up dissension, but a patient man calms a quarrel.

13:03 He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin.

21:23 He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity.

31:26 She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
