North Macon Presbyterian Church is a member of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), established in 1973 by like-minded congregations seeking a denomination that was devoted to the authority of Scripture and the proclamation of the gospel to the nations. The motto of the PCA at its founding still expresses our commitments as a congregation and a denomination today. We aspire to be:
“Faithful to the Scriptures, true to the Reformed faith, and obedient to the Great Commission of Jesus Christ.”
As a congregation of the PCA, we subscribe to the Westminster Confession of Faith, the Westminster Larger Catechism, and the Westminster Shorter Catechism as our statement of faith.
The Westminster Confession and Catechisms were originally crafted by over a hundred pastors and scholars representing England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. The coalition gathered at London’s Westminster Abbey over the course of seven years in the 1640s. Their mission was to craft a document that would summarize the teaching of Scripture on the vital doctrines of the Christian faith and provide a source of unity and instruction for like-minded churches. Its wisdom and pastoral insight continue to shape and guide us today.
While the Westminster Confession of Faith and Catechisms constitute the full statement of faith and practice of North Macon Presbyterian Church, the following brief statement is a helpful summary of the core evangelical commitments of our congregation:
- We believe that the Bible is the written Word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit and without error in the original manuscripts. The Bible is our infallible and divine authority in all matters of faith and life.
- We believe that all men are sinners and are totally unable to save themselves or even cooperate with God in efforts to earn their salvation.
- We believe that salvation is by God’s grace alone, who saves the people whom He draws to Jesus by His Holy Spirit. He convinces them of their sin and enlightens them so that they repent of their sins and trust in Jesus Christ as He is offered freely in the Gospel. Because God alone knows those who are His, we call on people everywhere to repent and to trust in Jesus Christ.
- We believe that Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, who became man and lived and died and rose again to atone for the sins of those who trust Him alone for their salvation. Jesus Christ is the only mediator between God and man.
- We believe that God’s Holy Spirit gives Christians the daily strength and wisdom they need to walk according to His will and to grow in holiness.
- We believe that Jesus Christ shall return to judge all mankind and to receive His people unto Himself.
